Information:
Switzerland has had a tradition for education since the late
Middle Ages when the large abbeys were centers of the cultural tradition. Basel is the site of Switzerland's first university
which was founded in 1460. The age of enlightenment (
18th century ) introduced new ideas in the field of education. I n
particular, three Swiss thinkers, got world-wide recognition: Jean-Jacques
Rousseau, Johann Heirich Pestalozzi
and Pere Gregoire
Girard. The Geneva
psychologist Jean Piaget, who died in 1980, developed completely new
cognitive approaches to educational theory and practice.
Historically:
Speaking, Swiss education before
1800 developed along much the same lines as that of Central Europe, that is
to say: education was first the task of the monasteries before municipal
schools were founded. In the 15th century the first university of our
country was founded by the city of Basle
in (1460).
